The Eating Disorders Unit: Information for Carers and Families

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulmia nervosa and binge eating are not solely a problem for the individual with the disorder, carers and families are seriously affected too. The following pages include practical information, answers to frequently asked questions, information on how to get involved in events and research in this area and some personal accounts of what it is like to care for someone with an eating disorder.

Help for Carers

We have devised a variety of interventions that may be of help for carers. These include DVDs, a book and workshops and provide the information and skills you need to optimise your role as a carer. If you are interested to find our more about this please contact A.Sepulveda@iop.kcl.ac.uk or j.barrera@iop.kcl.ac.uk

The word 'daughter' is often used to describe the person with the eating disorder and "parent" used to describe the person/people in the caring role. However eating disorders also affect males, and it may be friends, sisters, partners, step-parents, or other relatives who take on the caring role.
