Getting help for eating disorders

Visit your GP

Seeing a GP can be a good start. It is important to have the correct diagnosis. Your doctor can refer you to specialist professionals like psychiatrists, psychologists, dieticians, nutritionists, and counsellors - it may not be possible to access this support without seeing a doctor. If seeing a doctor is difficult perhaps you could talk to the practice nurse or someone at school or college that you trust.

Can I get treatment from the Eating Disorders Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry / SLaM?

If you want a referral for clinical care all services within the NHS route depend on your GP address and the local primary care trust. Professor Treasure works for SLAM (South London and Maudsley NHS Trust) in South East Thames. If you come from outside South East Thames it is possible for you to be seen by the national service component of SLAM which is based at the York Clinic at Guy's Hospital. However a referral from your local psychiatrist is necessary.
