activities and interests

Research Interests

My current research interests include the aetiology of Eating Disorders, the transgenerational pattern of transmission of eating disorders, as well as the role of feeding problems as precursors or risk factors for eating disorders. I have worked on a retrospective study investigating the role of childhood feeding problems and obstetric complications in sisters discordant for anorexia and bulimia nervosa and on a follow-up of premature infants and their risk for developing eating Disorders. I am currently working on a project focusing on growth, psychological development and eating and feeding habits of children born to mothers with Eating Disorders in the ALSPAC cohort. I am also collaborating with research centres outside the UK. My past research experience includes research in virology and other aspects of Child psychiatry.

Committee Membership

I have been a member of the Organising Committee of the “Maudsley European Forum” since Sept 2002. I have also been a member of the Public Affairs Council, Academy of Eating Disorders, since Sept 2005.

teaching activities

Undergraduate Teaching

Since September 2005, I have been organising and coordinating the medical students’ teaching at Guy’s Campus for GKT (with Professor Simonoff). This involves planning the taught sessions and tutorials for each term, as well as sitting on the year 4 Curriculum Committee and the CHDA Committee. I have also taught some seminars. I am currently supervising a student during a BSc intercalated degree in Abnormal Psychology at GKT; this involves supervising her research project. In collaboration with FIE I have coordinated and supervised two foreign (medicine and psychology) undergraduate students during their 3-month placements in the department. This entailed coordinating and organising their clinical and research experience as well as supervising them. I also organised, co-ordinated and participated in teaching a six-monthly, three-day course for Senior House Officers starting their Child Psychiatry clinical placements in the Trust between March 03 and Sept 2005. During the past year, I have also taught the session on “Physical Examination” on the same course.

Postgraduate Teaching

Since March 2003, I have been involved, on a yearly basis, in the Departmental Teaching Programme at the Deptartment of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry. This involves teaching students enrolled in the Diploma and MSc in Child Psychiatry courses. This mainly entails teaching in small groups and one-to-one tutorials. In addition, I have been the academic tutor for one MSc student, during 2003-2004, supervising her MSc dissertation project. Also, for four months I have been the academic tutor for an MSc student in this current academic year. I regularly carry out informal teaching sessions on Psychopathology in C&A Psychiatry to SHOs as their SpR during their placement.
