biography

Metin Basoglu, MD, PhD is the Head of Section of Trauma Studies at the Institute of Psychiatry of King’s College London and the Director of the Istanbul Centre for Behaviour Research and Therapy in Turkey. He has published extensively on phenomenology and behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. He is also internationally known for his work on war, torture, and natural disaster trauma and its treatment. In 1992 he published a book on Torture and Its Consequences: Current Treatment Approaches, which brought together available knowledge on the mental health effects of torture and their treatment and defined a new scientific discipline at the crossroads of psychiatry and human rights. In 1997 he launched a multi-site study of the psychological effects of war in more than 2,000 survivors from former Yugoslavia countries. Following the 1999 earthquakes in Turkey, he conducted work to develop a cost-effective mental health care model for earthquake survivors that can be disseminated on a largely self-help basis. He is currently working towards a similar mental health care model for war and torture survivors.
