Depression is an illness which may affect up to 1 in 5 women and men in their lifetimes. Individuals suffering from depression typically experience a low mood or difficulty in enjoying things to the extent that it also affects how they relate to their family members and friends and how they may function in their day to day activities.
In the Depression Study, we are looking at regions in the brain which are affected by depression and how these regions may change following treatment with antidepressant medication. This study is led by Dr Cynthia Fu and builds upon her previous research in how different treatments affect brain activity in individuals suffering from depression, including the talking therapy cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and antidepressant medications.
These studies have shown that depression is associated with changes in structure and activity in affective and cognitive processing networks in the brain. Her research is also leading to the development of biological markers to help to diagnose depression and to help to predict who will respond to treatment and to which type of therapy.
