biography

Dr Stewart trained in Medicine and Surgery at Leeds University, completed junior psychiatric training on the Royal Free Hospital rotation, and joined the Institute of Psychiatry as an academic specialist registrar in 1996 to investigate vascular risk factors for cognitive impairment in an older African-Caribbean population. This led to a prospective study of this population funded through a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology. Dr Stewart was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in 2003, as Head of the Section of Epidemiology in 2006, and as Clinical Reader from September 2007.

Previous and current supervised PhD/MDRes projects have included: 1) A qualitative and quantitative study of alcoholism and help-seeking behaviour in indigenous Taiwanese populations (completed); 2) A prospective study of the course and impact of major depression in Ethiopia (completed); 3) A study of mental disorders in young adults resettled through the Three Gorges Hydroelectric Project in China (completed); 4) A qualitative and quantitative study of help-seeking prior to deliberate self-harm in Taiwan (completed); 5) A prospective study of mortality, suicide and repetition following deliberate self-harm in Taiwan (completed); 6) A qualitative and quantitative study of memory complaints in a Primary Care setting; 7) A study of polyunsaturated fatty acids and cognitive function in older people with recovered major depression; 8) An analysis of mild cognitive impairment in developing nation populations (10/66 Dementia Research Programme); 9) A prospective study of perinatal mental disorder, family dynamics, and child health in Turkey; 10) An analysis of factors influencing response in people receiving acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors for dementia in the SLAM/IOP Biomedical Research Centre Clinical Case Register; 11) An analysis of quality of physical healthcare for people with mental disorders in Taiwan; 12) A UK analysis of severe mental disorder and physical healthcare outcomes.

activities and interests

The SLAM BRC Case Register

I have led the academic development of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Case Register. This is possibly the most extensive clinical case register for secondary mental health care. The Case Register Information System (CRIS) allows searches to be made of the fully electronic patient records system which has been operating in SLAM now for a number of years, and extracts anonymised data for secondary analysis including free text fields if required. The data resource contains full anonymised clinical records on over 150,000 service users, over 30,000 of whom are receiving active case management. The system was developed on time and on budget in Sep 2008 and is currently open for research use within SLAM.

Mental health in older adults

I have had a long-lasting interest in the relationship between vascular risk factors and dementia / depression, and in mental health outcomes in older African-Caribbean populations. I have also a particular interest in subjective memory impairment in older people and in its relationship with ’objective’ cognitive function and other markers of dementia risk.

Liaison Old Age Psychiatry

I share consultant responsibility for a multidisciplinary service providing dedicated liaison input for older inpatients at a local general hospital, one of four such services provided by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. My research interests have focused on the relationship between somatic factors and mental health, particularly in older people including: relationships between vascular risk factors, cognitive impairment and depression; associations between anthropometric measures and late-life cognition; associations between the emergence of dementia and somatic changes (e.g. in weight, cholesterol and blood pressure levels); associations between dental status / oral health and late-life cognition.

International mental health

Supervised research has included studies of cognitive function and dementia in African-Caribbean elders, a study of the outcome of major depression in a rural Ethiopian population, a study of help seeking prior to deliberate self-harm in Taiwan, an ongoing study of polyunsaturated fatty acid levels and cognition in Taiwan, a recently completed study of mental health in young adults relocated in China because of the Three Gorges hydroelectric project, and an ongoing study of family relationships and perinatal mental disorder in urban and rural Turkey.
