Sources of help and support for mental illness

Research information

Information about mental health and the research being undertaken by the Institute of Psychiatry and South London and Maudsley NHS Trust can be found on Mental Health Care, a new mental health information website developed in partnership with Rethink.

Mental Health Care currently focuses on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and will be expanded to cover a wide range of conditions.

Anxiety and Depression

Beating the Blues

Beating the Blues is an interactive, computer-based therapy for people suffering from depression and/or anxiety.

Eating Disorders Unit

The Institute of Psychiatry’s Eating Disorders Unit provides a range of high quality services for patients of all ages, and across the spectrum of eating disorders.

A wide range of information, including information for carers and service users can be found on the Eating Disorders Unit web site, which is run by staff at the Unit.

Obsessive compulsive disorder and young people

The OCD clinic at the Maudsley Hospital’s Department for Children and Adolescents is currently the only national specialist clinic for young people with OCD.

Staff for the clinic have produced a video that helps young people feel more ’in charge’ by letting them see that they are not the only person with OCD, and to share the experiences of others with the same problem.

Schizophrenia and cognitive remediation

Cognitive remediation is an intensive type of therapy that can help people with schizophrenia cope better with everyday life. It aims to help the patients improve cognitive deficits such as difficulties remembering things, poor concentration or a low attention span. Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley Hospital have found that it helps patients with severe problems with concentration and attention.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Our specialist team at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Centre for Anxiety Disorders at the Maudsley Hospital is carrying out a study evaluating three psychological treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The study will compare three such treatments. Treatment will be on an individual basis. There will be no medication involved.
