Research opportunities at the Institute of Psychiatry
What is a PhD / DClinPsy?
A PhD is a progamme of advanced study and research. It is both a training in how to do research and a piece of research work in itself. The regulations say that a PhD must form a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the subject and afford evidence of originality by the discovery of new facts and / or by the exercise of independent critical power. What this means is that in the course of a PhD the student will learn how to develop and investigate scientific theories, pulling together previous research with the new investigations which they develop and carry through. There is usually specific technical training but also a kind of apprenticeship where the student is guided by and learns from their supervisors. In the Institute this is supplemented by the richness of the academic and research life, high quality seminars and, of course, contact with other students and world class researchers. Doing a PhD demands high levels of motivation and the ability to think clearly. If your research interests are in Psychiatry, Psychology, Neuroscience or Behavioural Sciences the Institute of Psychiatry is an ideal place to study for a PhD. As one of the world’s foremost research institutes in this field the Institute offers a wide range of supervisory expertise and facilities.
The PhD can be done on a full-time or a part-time basis. Please note also that existing members of staff can register for a part-time PhD. The Institute also has many overseas links, and welcomes overseas students. Our experience is that some overseas (non EU) students benefit from further discussion to clarify options and details when considering doing a PhD at the Institute.
