Information about
Courses, learning and teaching at the Institute of Psychiatry

The Institute is the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental health problems.

We run a range of Taught Doctorates, MSc courses, Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates, ENB diplomas, associated courses and unassociated short courses.

Specialised postgraduate programmes are taught in relatively small student groups. Close contact occurs between staff and students throughout the programmes which enables students to become part of the dialogue of their chosen discipline. Teaching by staff with research and clinical expertise allows students to gain specialist knowledge in topics related to psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience and thus to develop their careers as clinicians, therapists, researchers and educators.

Training for Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists

The Maudsley and Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) offer a three-year training programme in clinical psychiatry and in the sciences basic to psychiatry in preparation for sitting the membership examinations for the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych).

This is a full time, postgraduate course open only to successful applicants onto the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital Senior House Officer (SHO) rotation.
